4.3 Critical weakness: narrow range of specializations

The range of specialties of clinical Medical Physics is in many countries still mostly restricted to the use of ionizing radiation in D&IR, NM and RO. Most countries also include occupational/public/environmental radiation protection (known as ‘Health Physics’ in the US) as a further specialty whilst others have made imaging with non-ionising radiation a separate specialty (although one can argue that it is really part of D&IR). It is our firm view that although these areas of specialization are very wide in scope, limiting the scope of the profession in this manner is risky as it is a case of putting all eggs in one basket. A profession that does not seek to expand its role will eventually contract owing to the pressures arising from commoditization. It would be wise to extend our scope to all medical devices and all physical agents. Some countries have already moved to expand the range of specialties e.g. audiology in the Netherlands, neurology and neurological physiology in Finland, physiological measurement in the UK. It is very important that Medical Physicists seek to expand their role in a proactive manner.
